CIO in Transition
Chris Heck served as CIO for Duke Energy until the end of 2018. He was responsible for IT strategy, architecture, infrastructure and the delivery and support of IT applications across the company.
Heck began his career with Duke Energy in 1983 as a programmer in the information services department. He spent time in many departments including Nuclear Construction, Marketing and Rates, Distribution, Transmission, and Business Development. After a series of leadership roles in power delivery and information management, Heck was named vice president of sales and marketing for DukeNet Communications in 2003, where he was responsible for revenue growth and business relations. Prior to being named CIO in 2014, Heck held several senior leadership roles in IT including leadership for the Duke Energy / Cinergy and the Duke Energy / Progress Energy merger integration efforts.
Heck graduated cum laude from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and received a Master of Computer Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
He is a former board member of Apparo and the Carolinas Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and remains active in both organizations. He has also been involved with Kairos Prison Ministries.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Heck and his wife, Brenda, have one daughter and one son.
