In 2008, with nearly $3 million from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Apparo (formerly NPower Charlotte Region) launched Project Ignite, a three-year pilot program that combined nonprofit technology education, collaboration and stabilization to help transform nonprofits.
Apparo set audacious goals for Project Ignite: create a mindset shift in the Charlotte nonprofit community that technology is essential to helping nonprofits solve community problems, and implement tangible solutions that change the way nonprofits achieve their missions.
In achieving these goals, Project Ignite established a new model for collaboration. It emphasized a focus on business challenges and processes, rather than mission-specific challenges. This focus allowed the project to create technology and business solutions that could easily be scaled across nonprofit sectors and across the country.
