Gartner analyst Earl Perkins was on site at Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated on Tuesday, March 31st for the CIO Insights to speak about The Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT is the network of dedicated physical objects (things) that contain embedded technology to sense or interact with their internal state or external environment. “The engineering world meets the IT world when there is a physical environment that is being changed or acted upon by a technological device,” said Perkins. “Operational Technology is the ‘Legacy’ IoT for Industry, and it’s a cheap way to control the environment.”
Other panelists in attendance were Joe Topinka with SnapAV, Kirby Miner with Sunbelt Rentals, and Dr. Kevin McKenzie with Clemson University.
But are our businesses ready to embrace the Internet of Things? “It’s all industry driven,” said Kirby Miner. “Working with different companies can change perspectives and needs.” Earl Perkins said businesses will have to redefine privacy. “Soon, you’re going to have devices all around you that can collect data from you, whether you have chosen it or not.”
“Ask lots of questions, be prepared to upset a lot of traditions, and think outside the box,” said Perkins. Kevin McKenzie advised to go after the things that are innovative and new while Joe Topinka added, “seek out the pain points that your customers are facing.”
